What do you mean slack? Christchurch is quite strict to the rules; It's just that some of the official (used on the day) rules seem to differ from those of the site :) Don't worry, the rules will be the same everywhere I think ;)

Thanks for the link. V. helpful for chemical spill but couldn't open the Turn on Green one. will give it another go. We are only using the 2 sensors at the moment programmed to read above or below a number -suitable for reading white/black. when both readings drop below 55 the robot stops. We then want it to turn right and follow the black again.

We are using variables to program the sensors and using the logic block to inform the loop controller when both sensors read the green checkpoints. We want the robot to stop then turn. We can't get this to work - the stop and turn blocks are located outside the loop. What have we missed here?

From my experience, It's almost impossible to seperate out a value for green from white and black using a light sensor sorry. I'm currently using a total of 8 light sensors to stay on the line and 2 to see green/silver. I never succeed with Standard '1 light sensor on each side', But if you find a way, please share! :)

Thanks Sam! That extra 5 cm really does help! I do so hope the admin clear that up. But you may have misunderstood my second problem. I just wanted to know the readings of the "Green spots" on the maze on the NXT light sensor. And by the way, I use a NXT v1.0 because I can't be bothered to get a new one.
Thanks a lot!

Hi Darko.

The first problem is a fairly common one within Premier Rescue. I've entered rescue a few years now, and although the rules state 27cm, they have actully been 32cm (27 is incredably hard to fit everything in, 5cm make a huge difference). I can't proove it will be the same this year, but prehaps Admin can clear that up. My current robot is about 30cm, And for now I'm gambling it's 32cm as per previous years.

As for green, thats a tricky one most people also struggle with. There is a bit of tutorial here:
http://robocupjunior.org.nz/_downloads/2.0_Training_%20Support-Rescue_Programming.pdf
And thats a start. I personally didn't get too much success with that, but the ideas behind it ('if both light sensors see black') proove a great start.

Hope that helps, Sam

Hello.
I am new to Robocup this year, and being a little over confident, I decided that I will do the Premier Rescue.
The two most recurring problem was packing everything into the "27 cm measuring cylinder" and the readings of the shortcut markers and chemical spill on the NXT light sensor.
I know I'll need to do the stuff in the first problem, but could someone help me with the second one? Please?

The reduction in size was to help solve 3 problems we were having in schools, homes and competition venues : uniformity, space and portability.
1. The material for the dance floor needed to be standardised so that robots would behave in a predictable manner at competitions. After much discussion we chose mdf because of its universal availability and its tendency to stay straight.
2. Many school rooms and homes do not have the space to lay a 3m by 3m floor down, or store it.
3. Those of us who cart dance floors from school to school or around schools and venues needed something portable. The smaller size allows a cheap portable practice floor to be made out of five or eight (depending on whether you want the overrun) 600 by 1200 x 3mm or 4.5mm mdf sheets which can fit in the back of a car and be stored under a desk, beside a fridge etc. Cost is around $7 per sheet.
Yes, it makes the dance a little different to choreograph, but should encourage the use of sensors for avoiding edges and bumps.

Why the chance in the size from 3m by 3m to 1.8 by 1.8m ? This will restrict the movement opportunities of the robotic dance and the viewing opportunties for the crowd.

Fustrated at the time to order equipment from overseas I spent part of the last break 'perfecting' a NZ developed version of the resuce tiles in association with a local print/design company. These are individually cut tiles printed on to 6mm coreflute (the stuff estate agents signs are made from). Compared to what normally is on offer I think the following is a fair assessment of the outcomes.

Advantages:-
1) Lightweight, full set just a couple of kg.

2) Can order individual tiles for extras/replacement.

3) 'Ready to go stes', no gluing or making other bits (bridge, speed bumps, silver foil etc), huge TIME saving. Only exception being that a block may need making for the premier end tile and it assumed you can provide a drinks bottle and a drinks can!

4) No need to mount on to another surface, eg cardboard or custom wood.

5) No cutting up etc.

6) 16 tiles are provided as in the rules, includes the 'start' tile not supplied on some versions.

7) Currently 7-10 days delivery.

8) Designed to allow better/easier detection between green/black (a lighter shade of green is used which gives a midway result between the white and black areas)

9) Successfully trialed at a Robocup Junior training event.

10) NZ Developed, helps NZ economy!

11) Initial cost of $325 (plus GST and Deelivery) is more than the single roll mat version, but much cheaper when considering having to also provide glue, timber etc plus the time needed to make the working version.

Disadvantages:-
Perhaps not as robust as mounted on 12mm custom wood and you perhaps need some sticky tape to prevent adjacent tiles from moving around too easily.

I finally re-found it but it was a pay for use website. I'd forgotten that.

There was a website where absolute beginners could practise doing stuff in a simulated environment e.g. how much time should you let the motor run for so that a robo-car turns 90 degrees?

It was lesson based and aimed at kids.

I never bookmarked it and now I can't find it.

Does anyone have the URL for it?

I'm developing a few resources to help with rescue. One is a simulator written in SCRATCH. Although this is different to how NXT-G works, it may be helpful for testing. For example, you can change/test the motor speed, turn angle, distance between light sensors etc all before you make make actual changes to your bot.

Any interested SCRATCH users, let me know and I can mail version 1 to you.

Great idea test_user, would it also transform in to a giant battle bot?
